Monett High School and local companies partner to engage senior class in Student Industry Tour

Businesses provide tours to expose students to careers available and skills needed

Monett, MO. – October 12, 2017 – On October 19th, Monett High School (MHS) will be giving members of the senior class the opportunity to see first-hand the diverse products and services developed in Monett and the types of careers available. One hundred seventy seniors will have the opportunity to visit two different locations, hear from company leaders, and learn about possible job opportunities.

Twelve local businesses will open their doors to host students: 3D Corporate Solutions, CoxHealth Monett Hospital, EFCO Corporation, IMEC, Jack Henry & Associates, Lacoba Nursing Homes, Monett Metals, Monett Police Department, PlayPower, SRC, Tyson, and WinTech.

Mr. David Williams, Principal, and Mr. Garrett Clark, Science teacher, proposed the event after having an opportunity to tour several local manufacturers through a teacher externship program. The Student Industry Tour was launched last year, with separate tour dates held for the entire junior and senior classes.

Williams sees many benefits for graduating seniors. “Going into our second year of providing these tours, our goal is that each Monett graduate will gain hands-on experiences with business leaders in our community. Our industry leaders invest a tremendous amount of time with this event and we are grateful for their willingness to partner with us.”

Jeff Meredith, Executive Director of the Monett Chamber of Commerce said, “Monett is very unique in its strong industrial base and the number of jobs available in a community this size. We’ve always had a positive relationship between our business community and the local school district, and this is just another example of that great partnership.”

Surveys were distributed to students which described each company, and gave them an opportunity to request specific sites to visit based on their interest. Teachers worked with students to prepare for the tours by researching the companies and developing questions to have on hand. Each student will have the opportunity to visit two different locations, with group sizes determined by the host company.

“3D Corporate Solutions is excited to have the opportunity to meet with the MHS students during the Student Industry Tour. Monett has diverse industries which allow the students the opportunity to choose any career and stay local. Without this program the students wouldn’t be able to see what jobs are available, what type of skills or education is needed to achieve their goal, and what employers have to offer,” said Michele Day, SHRM-CP, Human Resources at 3D Corporate Solutions.
